The Dilemma
The purpose of disinfecting is to kill live pathogens on hard surfaces. But products (like cotton) commonly used in disinfecting are proven to reduce the effectiveness of disinfectant solutions. The problem is an ionic binding that takes place between disinfectant and fibers. Because the “kill” ingredient in disinfectant binds to fibers, it does not release at the needed concentration to provide the expected or necessary kill efficacy. Cotton towels are known to reduce disinfectant concentration by over 50% within one hour, resulting in a sub-lethal dose.
Bacterial Resistance And Biofilms
When pathogens are exposed repeatedly to sub-lethal concentrations of disinfectants, they become increasingly disinfectant resistant. These resistant pathogens further protect themselves by creating biofilm – embedding themselves within a self-produced matrix of an extracellular polymeric substance (EPS). EPS causes pathogenic cells to stick to each other and to a surface. EPS thus becomes a highly protective “armor” that makes biofilm stubborn and highly resistant to remediation.

“Pure clean” doesn’t permit leaving dead pathogens on an allegedly disinfected surface. These dead bugs are actually bio-burden that surviving live bugs feed on, resulting in accelerated growth of pathogen colonies. Third party microbiology lab studies show that with water alone, Proton removes 99.9% of pathogens, including Norovirus, Listeria, E coli, MRSA, and Salmonella.
